Dan Petriw: Isles' Roster Taking Shape
- Dan Petriw

Im not sure where all the talk of Mayfield being a bad skater comes from. I mean is he Nick Leddy....no, but for a big man with that big reach, good hands, and willingness to take the body......he's a serviceable NHL dman.

It comes mostly from him being a poor skater.

Hahah i dont agree with that. I think he just a big goofball, but he's not that bad of a skater.

Furthermore, for his size and hands, he does not clear waivers......he's all upside.

I've seen guys blow by him on a couple of occasions when he gets in the lineup. Not giving up on him but his skating is something that needs improvement if he wants to be a regular IMO

I've seen every d man get blown by at some point......but, I attribute that to positioning and being young. He's got really good hands, and he's only gonna get stronger. I think he's a sleeper...

Like I said I'm not giving up on him and I actually like him but I do think his skating is holding him back a little. Which isn't a terrible thing a lot of young players have flaws to work on

Look im not saying he's Leddy......but I think his big stride makes him a bit awkward, but I keep hearing people saying his skating is bad, and i disagree.

I just think its a numbers game.....same with Pelech. Both looked just fine when called up. If Mayfield has to clear waivers, i think he gets scooped.

I never said it was bad I just said it could be better. You disagree and that's fine. Yeah he might get claimed, I think its 50/50

It comes from watching him play hockey on a regular basis.

I really want Mayfield to succeed. He is a great kid, but he has to be quicker to play in this league. This isn't 1997. If you can't skate you don't play

This is exactly what I take issue with.......his skating is not how you're portraying it. Phuck sakes, Brian Strait had a regular shift, and he was atrocious.

Strait got playing time because he was capuano's bff.

Well nobody is saying he's Lieutenant Dan. But the fact is he is a below-average skater and it's going to hold him back from being a productive, full-time NHL player.

We'll agree to disagree.......I dont think his skating is what holding him back. I think they opt for veterans over rookies.....always. Last season both Pelech and Mayfield did well when called upon.

Right but to say that if you cant skate you cant play is incorrect......cause Brian Strait was living proof. He did nothing well, yet somehow he had a regular shift.

It's not really a matter of opinion. His skating his not up to par for where an NHL player needs to be. It's been documented as an issue since we drafted him. As recently as 4 months ago.

— Scott Mayfield got in six games of NHL work this season, again showing that he’s a physical force and that his footwork and skating need improvement to be an NHL regular. He’s a restricted free agent who’ll get a contract for sure and may, depending on whom the Isles bring in, start next season as the No. 7 guy on the depth chart. That can be a blessing — hey, you’re in the NHL! — and a curse, as being a healthy scratch for weeks on end shows the organization values you, but only to a certain point.

Dan, don't be shocked if Pulock loses playing time or goes back to Bridgeport. Capuano is the coach after all, and he loves playing guys that are older and played in the Boston area because of their "battle level". Let's not forget, when Pulock scored his first NHL goal, and had a great game overall against Nashville (was the only one that showed up to play). He got scratched for 4 games in favor of strait and zidlicky.

Not for nothing kindlyrick but do you have to argue with everything on here??

Every time someone makes a point you argue. I wonder if u a lawyer. You object to everything.

IT is so obvious that Mayfield is a step below everyone right now. He is slow and has a lot to learn. WE have better options and he is the low guy on the totem pole

Im laughing over here......when i post an article you scoff at it and chirp the writer. Now all of a sudden Staple is the talent guru? I think when Mayfield first came up yes his foot speed was slow. Last season I watched him and he did not look out of place at all. Its improved tremendously......i think its lazy journalism honestly. I guess Brian Straits footspeed was up to par.....to be an NHL regular?

I contest what i disagree with......which im perfectly within my right to do. I am not a lawyer.....just calling it how i see.

It is not obvious that he is a step slower, as seen by my Brian Strait comparison. I think its a numbers game.....and the isles go with veterans over youth always.

Im not saying Mayfield should make this NHL roster as there are better options. But, Im also not going to blame it on his footspeed.
